PROJECTS

2001 – Fenchurch Street, London

MacWhirter Limited are currently installing Mitsubishi electric variable flow simultaneous
heat recovery systems in the square mile finance centre.

The project is a full refurbishment of the first skyscraper built in the City of London.

The project will consist of 40 VRF systems and 260 fan coils when the contract is completed

2000 – Star City Birmingham

MacWhirter Limited, installed all Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning services to
four large trading outlets in this major new retail development.

The installations have met the new ventilation codes of practice to ensure optimum
ventilation for all occupants.

The outlets are Themed Restaurants and Bars, which are recognised nationally as:

Old Orleans

De-Alto’s

Bar Censsa

Long Island Iced Tea

2000 – Wessex Water

On this project, MacWhirter Limited installed Carrier rooftop package units,
Airedale close control downflow units, Hitachi VRF and Hitachi split systems.

Environmental issues were a major consideration for this contract.
All refrigerant used on site was non-ozone depleting R407C.

All the units on site were controlled and monitored by the building management system.
For instance, should someone switch on the air-conditioning system the windows
would automatically close and if the room was unoccupied the air-conditioning system
would automatically switch off.

1999 –  R F Brookes, Rogerstone, South Wales

On this brand new 20,000m2  food production unit, MacWhirter designed and installed
air-conditioning and ventilation services.

The most notable feature regarding this development was that it was the first major project in the
United Kingdom, where 10 off Mitsubishi Electric variable flow simultaneous heat recovery systems
were selected, operating on R407C refrigerant to serve the adjoining 4300m2 office block on the project.

1999 – P A Consulting, Bromley

During building refurbishment of this training complex, MacWhirter Limited were employed to provide
air-conditioning to lecture theatres and leisure areas.

Part of the installation utilised the latest range of Carrier cassette type split systems operating on a
recently introduced high pressure HFC Refrigerant R410A.  This refrigerant, whilst being a blend, has no
temperature glide between the different chemicals, thereby enhancing performance and efficiency when
compared with other non-ozone depleting refrigerants being installed due to the imminent ban on HCFC22.

R410A has operating pressures 60% higher than any other refrigerant used for air-conditioning and
considerable care and attention must be applied to components and installation practice.

This is the first known installation utilising R410A within the UK.

1999 – 7 Manchester Street, London

MacWhirter Limited installed one of the first Daikin VRV Plus systems in the UK on this project.

The VRV Plus concept integrates two or three VRV outdoor units together via a junction box so
that the various units operate as one system, therefore saving on the amount of pipework normally
required were 3 separate systems used, also saving on valuable space within the mechanical
riser and reducing the overall capital cost.

1999 – Spear, Leeds & Kelloggs, London

MacWhirter Limited installed three Toshiba VRF systems to this office area.
The office had four existing Daikin VRV systems already in operation.

MacWhirter Limited had to relocate all the existing fan coil units to suit the new office layout.
The new Toshiba systems were installed to help cope with the additional heat load added by new
dealer desks and the corresponding increased heat gains for computers and occupancy.

In addition, air-conditioning was fitted to a new multi-million pound comms room.
This utilised two Toshiba split systems operating on a run and standby system controlled and
monitored by a separate control panel providing automatic changeover should a fault occur.

1998 – Morriston Hospital, South Wales

MacWhirter designed and installed refrigeration chillers providing nearly 2 megawatts of cooling
capacity to the Burns Unit operating theatres.

The system was enhanced with Ice Storage to reduce peak ambient operation, thereby improving
chiller efficiency and reducing electrical costs.

At night, the chillers build 5000 kilowatt hours of ice which is used during the daytime.

1997 – Royal Mail, Oxford Street, London

MacWhirter Limited installed Daikin VRV heating and cooling heat pumps within the Marketing
Sales and Finance Offices of the Royal Mail.

All the work was carried out at night to minimise disruption and as Principal Contractor we
demonstrated considerable care with no safety incidents.

1993 – St Rollox APC

MacWhirter Limited, installed 56 Daikin VRV systems at a new sorting hall in Glasgow.
This is one of the largest installations carried out using the VRV or VRF concept.

1990 – Blackburn Ice Arena, Lancashire

MacWhirter Limited designed and installed a 60 metre by 30 metre Ice Rink for public ice
skating and professional competition.

The project consisted of all refrigeration plant for ice production hydraulic installation ice rink piping
and ice paid construction. Additional items included environmental control and dehumidification for the Arena.

The complete mechanical and electrical services were designed and installed through IDMS MacWhirter,
a joint venture company.

MacWhirter Limited continues to provide full maintenance on the operation.

The rink construction and refrigeration plant were installed without using any CFC products which were subsequently
banned from use 10 years later due to environmental damage to the ozone layer.
